Camp Ranger

 

 

 

 

Matt Banaszewski is the Camp Ranger for East Carolina Scout Reservation, Boy Scouts of America. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and joined Scouts at a very young age. He earned the Eagle Scout rank in 1995. Matt joined the United States Army in 1997 and had a very successful 20-year career. He retired from the Army in 2017 and went right back to working with the Boy Scouts of America. He was the Program Director for the Midnight Sun Council in Fairbanks, Alaska. Matt joined the East Carolina Council team in 2020 as the Camp Ranger.

Chairman

 

Lt Col Harry E. Sanders Jr., USAF, Ret., serves as the Chairman of the Pamlico Sea Base Committee. Following his career in the US Air Force, Col Sanders served 20 years in the private sector as a Senior Vice President and Executive Director with American Systems, an engineering services corporation located in Chantilly, VA. He is a life-long Wood Badge trained 50–year Scouter; a recipient of the Silver Beaver and Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Awards; has served on the staff of three National Jamborees, and currently serves as the District Chairman of the Blackbeard District of the East Carolina Council. He also serves as a US Air Force Academy Liaison Officer for high schools in northeastern North Carolina and is active as a Past National President with the National Sojourners, a military Masonic organization focused on Americanism and patriotism. Col Sanders holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and a MA in Management & Supervision.

Major General Kurt J. Ryan, Ret. was born, raised, and educated in Pennsylvania, Kurt joined the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer following graduation from college in 1987. He completed 34 years of service in the United States Army, retiring in 2021 at the rank of Major General.      

Inspired by a love of Country, service to family, faith, and community; he strives to give back; to make a difference helping others as others have helped him through life. Kurt’s passion is to teach, coach and mentor, helping develop leadership skills in our youth.

He is a graduate of numerous schools and is awarded a Bachelor of Science degree; two Masters of Science degrees and an honorary Doctorate.

He is most proud of the accomplishments from his youth, including the coveted award of Eagle Scout, and numerous wrestling championships. He enjoys many outdoor activities, including watersports on the eastern coastal waters of North Carolina, bicycling long distances, and he maintains a deep passion in the study of American and military history. 

Kurt is BSA National Camp School certified TREK leader and volunteers on many committees and civic organizations, including the Eastern NC BSA Pamlico Sea Base committee. He enjoys leading programs at Camp Boddie and Pamlico Sea Base in the summer.

Pete Wagner, DO, FACC, FACOI, NAUI Instructor/Course Director

Dr. Wagner is a board certified cardiologist and a diver since 1977. His interests are dive medicine and underwater photography. He has extensive experience in pre-hospital emergency care having spent nearly 20 years in the rescue service and has instructed emergency medical technicians, paramedics and physicians. Active with Scouting since 1968, he is an Eagle Scout, son of an Eagle and father of three Eagles. He is a Silver Beaver recipient is Woodbadge trained and has served the council in several program related roles.

H. Ray Franks, a graduate of East Carolina University, retired from a 40-year professional career in the Boy Scouts of America in 2015. He served 20 of those years as Scout Executive and CEO in Huntington WV and East Carolina Council, Kinston, NC. Beginning in 1975 as a District Executive in Kinston, NC he served in Wilmington, NC, District Executive Muli-Person; Director of Support Service, Louisville, KY before starting his Scout Executive career.
He has served as Program Director, Camp Bonner, first  Camp Director at Camp Bowers (Cape Fear Council) and participated in the construction of Camp Crooked Creek (Lincoln Heritage Council. Franks has directed Camp Schools for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and served on Camp School staffs as leader of the program section.
Today he serves as a Camp Authorization to Operate Reviewer for National Council, BSA and Camp Visitation Team Member for Territory 15. He recently served as the NCAP chair for East Carolina Council.
In the community he is the treasurer and Executive Board Member for Pitt County Council on Aging. Franks is active at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church where he is the chairman of the buildings and grounds committee and Senior Warden. Professionally he is a physical examination training assistant at the Brody School of Medicine in the clinical skills department.
